Author and artist, Bertall, asserts that this collection of art and commentary is 'neither the work of Imagination nor Fancy.' He hopes that it will have 'at least a curious interest for many' and claims the work to be 'just and truthful.' Brown cloth boards with pictorial front cover and titles. It is possible the latter were originally coloured and have faded over the years - see main photo. The boards are both rubbed and scuffed in places; especially along the edges. Corners are worn. The spine's structure is firm; including at the head and tail. The binding remains taut. In all, there are forty whole-page colour graphics - all present - see example photo. Pages: all are at least mildly tanned with a fair amount of foxing. This is more pronounced on the preliminary and later pages of the book - see photo of the title page as an example of where the discolouration is more prominent. Bottle green endpapers with an ex-libris bookplate on the front pastedown (+ a bookbinder's tiny sticker: 30 x 10 mm); also a previous owner's name in ink on the page opposite the Artist's Preface. Unpaginated (several recounts came up with approx. 86 pages). 4to.
