A delightful nineteenth-century guide to sea shells, with illustrations by the conchologist George Brettingham Sowerby I. An illustrated edition of this uncommon work in the publisher's original pictorial boards.Previous owner's inscription in colour pencil to the front free end paper.Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece, many in-text engraved vignettes, and eleven engraved plates to the rear, by the British naturalist, illustrator and conchologist George Brettingham Sowerby I (1788-1854). A guide to where to find and how to identify sea shells, with detailed descriptions of their inhabitants. This work was written by John George Wood, or the Reverend J. G. Wood (1827-1889), an English writer whose successful work popularised natural history in the nineteenth century. Two pages of publisher's advertisements to the front of the work, and three pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. In the publisher's original pictorial boards. Externally generally smart, with bumping to the extremities and shelf wear to the boards. Significant loss to the backstrip. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
