Thinking about becoming a handyman, but don’t know where to start?
You probably don’t need another career that requires years of schooling, a massive investment, or permission from someone else to begin.
You need practical skills. A clear starting point. And a business people actually need.
Common Sense Factor® Becoming a Handyman: What to Do First is a practical guide to starting a handyman business, setting fair prices, building reliable systems, and developing the kind of reputation that keeps customers calling you back.
Drawing on more than four decades of hands-on experience in skilled trades, hardware retail, home inspection, and property maintenance, Peter Last shares lessons learned from job sites, service calls, and years of being trusted to care for other people’s homes. His experience includes seven years with Home Hardware and 10 years providing ongoing property-maintenance services for Community Living Sarnia-Lambton.
This is not a get-rich-quick book.
It is not a promise that you can buy a toolbox today and build a six-figure business tomorrow.
It is about something far more valuable:
Becoming someone people trust with their homes.
Homeowners have an endless list of things that need attention.
- A loose door.
- A dripping faucet.
- Damaged trim.
- A clogged gutter.
- A repair that is too small for a large contractor, but too important to ignore.
You do not need to know everything before you begin. You need to understand what you can do safely and competently, what belongs with a licensed professional, how to price your work properly, and how to create a customer experience people remember.
Inside, you’ll learn how to:- Decide which services you should offer
- Start without buying every tool imaginable
- Set prices that respect your time and your customer
- Build simple systems for estimates, scheduling, jobs, and follow-up
- Avoid common mistakes that cost new operators money
- Know when a job is outside your scope
- Build trust through communication and reliability
- Turn satisfied customers into repeat business and referrals
- Grow when demand justifies it, without creating unnecessary overhead
Customers remember whether you showed up.
They remember whether you communicated.
They remember whether you respected their property.
They definitely remember whether you solved the problem without creating another one.
Technical ability matters. Reliability turns that ability into a business.
You don’t need a truck overflowing with tools. You don’t need a complicated business model. And you don’t need to pretend you know everything.
You need practical knowledge, good judgment, reliable systems, and the discipline to do what you said you would do.
Who This Book Is For
This book is for people considering a practical second career, experienced tradespeople looking for greater independence, retirees who want productive income, and anyone interested in building a small service business around skills people genuinely need.
It is not for shortcut chasers, corner-cutters, or anyone looking for easy money without responsibility.
A handyman business is built one job, one customer, and one reputation at a time.
Do that well, and those small jobs can become something much bigger:
- More independence.
- More control over your schedule.
- A stronger reputation.
- A business built around useful work.
You don’t need to have everything figured out.
You need to know what to do first.
