Add to basketA black Morocco binding with gilt designs to front and back boards and spine. From the library at Farren Connell, Mount Nugent, Co.Cavan the ancestral home of Major- General Oliver Stewart Wood Nugent, KCB, DSO,1860-1926.Oliver Nugent was a British Army Officer known for his command of the 36th (Ulster) Division during the First World War and particularly at the battle of the Somme.William Orpen, the Irish Artist, painted his portrait which now hangs in the Belfast City Hall. There is a book plate of a member of the Nugent family and a Dublin booksellers ticket on the pastedown. The book does not have a title page -there is no indication of it being torn out and might have been overlooked when book was bound. However, it makes it difficult to date the book. The binding certainly has the look of a middle to late 18th century work and the text is old English. The first page of text is the contents page with the signature a 3. There was also a leaflet loosely inserted " Prayers to be used immediately before The Litany" dated 1832 and printed in Dublin by John and George Grierson,Printers to the King's Most Excellent Majesty" As a binding.
