Add to basketRobert W. Chambers. The Common Law. NY: Grosset & Dunlap, 1931, Constance Bennett Edition, 536 pp. *** This is the photoplay edition published in conjunction with the popular film released by RKO Pictures in 1932. It has the rare original color illustrated dust jacket (not price clipped) in a clear protective cover. The novel was originally published in 1911. This edition has four (4) movie stills and a number of full-page and text illustrations by Charles Dana Gibson. The contrast between the original drawings from the 1911 edition and the movie scenes reveals how much things changed in just two decades. The film starred Constance Bennett, an early Hollywood blonde of the 1920's and 1930's, who became a major star, at one point the highest paid actress in the movie industry. Also starring in this film were Joel McCrea, Hedda Hopper, Robert Williams, et. al. This is a dramatic love story of struggling American artist John Neville trying to achieve success in Paris, and Valerie, a beautiful young American woman who seeks employment as a studio model. Neville is from a blue-blood family, Valerie from more modest origins. They fall in love, but the inevitable complications arise to make the affair more interesting than it otherwise might have been. One scene has Valerie disrobing so John can better ascertain her suitability as a model. No actual nudity ? that was left to the imaginations of the audience.
