The author draws upon extensive research, dissecting the stomach contents of over 900 crows to reveal their preferences and behaviors. The book highlights the crow's omnivorous nature, uncovering a diverse menu that includes insects, fruits, seeds, and even small animals. It challenges the perception of crows as solely pests, showcasing their role as scavengers and seed dispersers. The author examines the crow's impact on agriculture, discussing the potential for conflict with farmers while emphasizing the bird's contributions to the ecosystem. Beyond the scientific observations, this book provides a glimpse into the complex social dynamics of crows. Their roosting habits, migration patterns, and communal behaviors shed light on their remarkable intelligence and adaptability. The author skillfully weaves together scientific data and personal anecdotes, offering a comprehensive and engaging exploration of this enigmatic species. Through its meticulous analysis, this book deepens our understanding of the Common Crow, revealing the intricate web of its ecological interactions and challenging our perceptions of its place in the natural world. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. All of these charges are sustained by the stomach examinations, so far as the simple fact that Crows feed upon the substances named. But the extent of the injury is a very different matter.
In order to ascertain whether the sum of the harm done outweighs the sum of the good, or the contrary, the different kinds of food found in the stomachs have been reduced to quantitative percentages and contrasted. The total quantity of corn eaten during the entire year amounts to 25 percent of the food of adult Crows, and only per cent of the food of young Crows. Leaving the young out of consider ation, it may be said that in agricultural districts about one-fourth of the food of Crows consists of corn. But less than 14 percent of this corn, and only 3 percent of the total food of the Crow, consists of Sprouting corn and corn in the milk; the remaining 86 percent of the corn, or 97 percent of the total food, is chiefly waste grain picked up here and there, mainly in winter, and of no economic value.
In the case of cultivated fruits the loss is trivial. The same is true of the eggs and young of poultry and wild birds, the total for the year amounting to only 1 percent of the food.
