Lawrence Freedman?s Command - The Politics of Military Operations from Korea to Ukraine is one of those books that arrives on your shelf looking suspiciously like homework for a future NATO briefing, yet somehow ends up being consumed at 1am while muttering ?well that explains Afghanistan then? into a cup of cold tea. Freedman, one of Britain?s grand strategists and professional explainers of why wars never quite go according to plan, takes the reader on a brisk tour through decades of military command, political interference, impossible objectives, and the timeless human tradition of senior officials confidently improvising history in real time. From Korea to Iraq to Ukraine, this is essentially a study of what happens when maps, egos, intelligence reports, television cameras and reality collide at high velocity. What makes the book especially enjoyable is the slow dawning realisation that modern warfare is not, in fact, an elegant game of chess conducted by stoic geniuses in underground bunkers, but often a sprawling committee meeting with tanks. Freedman dissects the awkward dance between generals and politicians with the weary tone of a man who has spent decades watching governments discover, repeatedly and with great surprise, that invading places is the easy part. There are strategic masterplans, naturally, but also misunderstandings, rivalries, media panic, personality clashes, logistical disasters and the occasional national catastrophe disguised as ?mission creep? If you enjoy books where everyone involved sounds very intelligent right up until everything catches fire, this is absolutely your territory. Penguin has packaged it in the now-standard serious-modern-history style: sober typography, clean design, and the implicit promise that you too can become the sort of person who casually says things like ?Clausewitz remains relevant? during lunch. The condition is listed as Good, meaning this copy has survived at least one previous owner?s attempt to understand geopolitics without starting a podcast. It may contain the faint aura of academic anxiety, policy think-tank coffee, or somebody repeatedly underlining sentences about strategic overreach while doomscrolling headlines from Eastern Europe. As sold by Crappy Old Books, this is less a simple second-hand paperback and more a portable monument to the eternal optimism of governments who believe the next intervention will definitely be the tidy one. Perfect for military historians, politics obsessives, armchair strategists, and anyone who has ever looked at the news and wondered whether global events are being coordinated by exhausted middle managers with PowerPoint presentations.…

A timely history of the interplay between politics and military operations, 'Command is the history of our time' (Guardian)
Military command has been reconstructed and revolutionized since the Second World War by nuclear warfare, small-scale guerrilla land operations and cyber interference. Freedman takes a global perspective, systematically investigating its practice and politics since 1945 through a wide range of conflicts from the French Colonial Wars, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Bangladesh Liberation War to North Vietnam's Easter Offensive of 1972, the Falklands War, the Iraq War and Russia's wars in Chechnya and Ukraine. By highlighting the political nature of strategy, Freedman shows that military decision-making cannot be separated from civilian priorities and that commanders must now have the sensibility to navigate politics as well as warfare.
