About this Item
Unadated, ca. 1851. Size:5 ¾ inches x 8 ½ in., half-title; colored, John Leech frontispiece of Romulus & Remus, with tissue guard; design title-page printed in red and black; preface; contents; list of engravings on steel; list of engravings on wood; xii, [1]-308 pp., illustrated with 10 colored steel engravings, and numerous, in-text wood engravings of John Leech drawings. Dark green cloth with elaborate gilt designs and titling on the spine, including three John Leech figures, and a larger Leech figure gilt on the front cover, and blind-stamped borders around the covers; all edges gilt. The front paste-down has the name "Cohn" in pencil at upper left corner. Front free end-paper has the name "Arthur Hazen Chase" and "from his Aunt Alice" followed by three question marks, and the drawing of a human profile, all in ink. Something sized about 4 in. x 8 in. was laid in on this free end-paper and has left offset. This has caused darker offset to the reverse of the free end-paper and to the half-title, and the names and profile drawing can be clearly discerned thereon. Similarly, something laid-in between the last page (p. 308) and a blank page has left offset. The rear end-papers are soiled and stained, as are two blank pages after the half-title. Someone has underlined the name "Beckett" on the title page. All edges have dusting. Some pages have light foxing on the margins. The blank reverses of some plates have dusting and light foxing. The gilt on the spine has faded. Wear to the spine ends and to the corners. Rear cover shows a dark stain shaped like a piece of scotch tape. Back inner hinge shows re-pasting. Front and back hinges show some cracking. Seller Inventory # ABE-1281863431
