Paperback. The assurance of God's grace for troubled hearts and anxious consciences. In The Comfort of Lutheran Doctrine, Matthew C. Harrison addresses one of the deepest questions Christians face: How can we know that God's grace is truly for us? Presenting Christian doctrine as a source of real comfort, Harrison shows how forgiveness, assurance, and peace are found not in shifting emotions or personal achievement but in the finished work of Jesus Christ. Drawing from essays originally published in The Lutheran Witness, Harrison presents a pastoral vision of Lutheran theology centered on the certainty of salvation through Christ alone. Grounded in Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions, these reflections show how God's promises speak directly to the fears, doubts, and struggles of everyday life, directing readers away from themselves and to Christ's saving work. Centered on Christ crucified and risen, this book explores: How the distinction between Law and Gospel brings clarity, forgiveness, and lasting comfortWhy God's Word, Baptism, Absolution, and the Lord's Supper provide assurance no feeling can matchHow Christ's saving work secures salvation by grace aloneWhat the Christian faith says about suffering, guilt, and life's deepest woundsHow vocation, family, and daily work are lived in the freedom of God's mercy Writing with a pastor's heart and a theologian's care, Harrison addresses difficult questions honestly, never minimizing sin or human suffering while continually directing readers to the certainty found in Christ's completed work. Through biblical reflection, personal stories, and insights drawn from the Lutheran tradition, he shows that doctrine is not merely a collection of theological propositions but a source of enduring comfort for burdened consciences. Whether you're exploring Lutheran Christianity, seeking a deeper understanding of God's grace, or looking for biblical assurance amid life's challenges, The Comfort of Lutheran Doctrine offers a clear, Christ-centered vision of faith rooted in the enduring promises of God. What is the significance of Lutheran doctrine? It all comes down to comfort for the troubled conscience. And true comfort can only be found when nothing is left to uncertainty and chance.
This collection of essays from Rev. Matthew C. Harrison, many of which are taken from his presidential letters in The Lutheran Witness, points to the authority of Scripture, the comfort of Christ’s resurrection and salvation, and the certainty of the Lutheran Confessions. This comfort and assurance in Christ Jesus dispels the devil’s accusations against us, eases our anxieties, and helps us live confidently in a world of uncertainty.
The Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison has served as assistant pastor of Village Lutheran Church, Ladue, MO since 2010 while also serving as president of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS). As pastor and president, he has been called to comfort and lead God’s people.
