About this Item
A Comedy of Conscience by S. Weir Mitchell follows Miss Serena Vernon, who is described as a "spinster by choice." Beautifully written, the novel may be read in part as an interesting social history of early twentieth century America. The author Silas Weir Mitchell (1829-1914) himself was fascinating figure. A physician by trade, he was an army surgeon who is credited with developing the later controversial treatment of the "rest cure." In addition to the numerous medical articles he wrote on a wide variety of topics, he anonymously published poetry and other works, including short stories and stories for children. This beautiful art nouveau edition of his novel A Comedy of Conscience may be rated as being in Fair condition. There are some remnants of an old sticker on the cover, the top and bottom of the spine is somewhat worn, and there is some light bumping and wear to the corners. There is discolouration to the tops and bottoms of the pages, and the front hinge is cracked. The binding in general is tight, though there is at least one loose page. Nevertheless, an aesthetically pleasing and readable copy. Seller Inventory # 20
