Print on Demand. This book is a highly analytical treatise that delves into the complexities of columns under static loading, covering a wide array of scenarios, including solid and non-uniform columns, non-homogeneous bracing, flat and both fixed and pinned ends, bending moments at the ends, eccentrically applied loads, and both lateral and tertiary flexure. The author provides a comprehensive overview of existing research and experimental work, presenting a variety of empirical formulae and examining their limitations and validity. The book places particular emphasis on the influence of end conditions, the effect of initial curvature, and the significance of material properties on column behavior. The author's thorough investigation and meticulous examination make this book an invaluable resource for engineers and researchers seeking to understand the intricacies of column design and behavior. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

III. Synthetical. Owing to the conditions now prevailing, it has been found impossible to get the complete work published, and in the present volume the historical portion, which consisted of a short summary of each important memoir, including all the published experimental work, has been replaced by a Bibliography. This Bibliography has been brought up to date, and includes, it is believed, all the more important original work on the subject. Articles of secondary interest and repetitions of work previously published have not been included.
