Item description from seller

One blue-printed steamship pass, with printed illustration & letterhead for the Columbia River & Puget Sound Navigation Co. steamer "Flyer," signed both by L.B. Seeley and Capt. Charles T. Kamm, from the library of Caroline Augusta Gray Kamm (1840-1932), noted socialite and philanthropist in Portland, built home for poor women & girls with the YWCA, and was daughter of PNW pioneer William H. Gray (1810-1889) who traveled to the Lapwai Mission in Lewiston, ID in 1836 where he was the Nez Perce secular agent, and she subsequently later married Jacob Kamm (1823-1912), pioneering Oregon steamship builder, industrialist, entrepreneur, and co-owner/operator of the Ilwaco Railway & Navigation Co. An exceptionally scarce original steamship pass for the storied "Flyer" steamship, famed for her long service from 1891 to 1929, and ran for millions of miles at high speed, more than any other inland vessel at the time. Built originally at the Johnson Shipyard in Portland, OR, entirely of Douglas Fir specifically prepared for prolonged exposure to saltwater, and included a very popular dining room. Originally fitted with a steel boiler from the Willamette Iron & Steel Works of Portland, OR, she was a wood burner, consuming 24 cords of wood every day. L.B. Seeley (1851-1932), son of the Ohio steel king, Boudinot Seeley (1822-1910), not only oversaw the Oswego Iron Works blast furnaces and production for his father's companies, but also co-owned and operated the Columbia River & Puget Sound Navigation Co., of which the Flyer was the first, alongside the Bailey Gatzert, Telephone, Fleetwood, and others, perhaps best remembered as the "White Line." Charles Tilton Kamm (1860-1906), was mate, master & pilot of several of the Kamm steamships on the Columbia & Lewis Rivers, including the Undine and Lurline who sailed the Portland, Vancouver, & Astoria route, and eventually became Superintendent of the Vancouver Transportation Co. & Lewis River Transportation Co., before dying suddenly of a stroke at 46. Original autograph signatures of either man are quite uncommon.…
