The Colour of London: Historic, Personal, & Local By W. J. Loftie. Illustrated by Yoshio Markino. With an Introduction by M. H. Spielmann and an Essay by the Artist. Publisher: Chatto & Windus, London, 1914 (MCMXIV). New Impression. Hardback without dust jacket. Original decorative cloth boards show rubbing, standard bumping to the corners and extremities, minor surface marks, and distinct wear with small damage to the bottom corner. The binding is fragile; the paper is cracked at the front internal hinge, with the underlying binding netting clearly showing. No internal owner inscriptions or names. Pages feature rough-cut edges, a 1cm closed tear to the outer margin of one page, and light to moderate foxing throughout, extending to the closed page edges, light creasing and chipping. The colour frontispiece is present with its original protective tissue guard. All other 47 full-page colour plates and 12 sepia drawings are collated complete and in good condition, featuring their original protective tissue guards. 236 pages. A beautifully illustrated Edwardian-era historical portrait of England's capital, blending William John Loftie's engaging architectural and cultural commentary with the remarkably atmospheric artwork of Yoshio Markino. Living in London at the turn of the century, Markino hybridized Western techniques with traditional Japanese styles to produce evocative, world-famous watercolours capturing the city's damp streets, glowing gaslights, and thick, romantic fogs. Complete with Markino's own introductory essay explaining his artistic process, this scarce 1914 printing serves as a captivating piece of Anglo-Japanese cultural exchange and a treasure trove of early 20th-century maritime and city artwork.
