Item description from seller

folio. [pp. 194]. partly black letter. late 18th century marbled calf, rebacked & restored, Royal Arms in gilt on covers (occasional foxing). fine armorial bookplate of Stanesby Alchorne, Tower of London. embossed ownership stamp of George Henry Williams of Brooklyn, New York. Stanesby Alchorne [1727-1800] was His Majesty's Assay Master of the Royal Mint in the Tower of London. Part of Alchorne's library was sold at auction in 1848. Many of his books are now held by the John Rylands University Library in Manchester. George Henry Williams [1823-1910] served as US Attorney General and was nominated by President Grant in 1873 for the post of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Rumours and allegations of misappropriation of government funds led to the withdrawal of the nomination and Williams' forced resignation in 1875. It is probably Williams' note in pencil of the front flyleaf recording the purchase of the book in Sept. 1864 for $1.50.
