Add to basketCOLLECTED EARLY POEMS brings together for the first time much of Robert Lavett Smith’s unpublished early work, and more importantly, the complete texts of four long-out-of-print chapbooks. These titles comprise most poems of the first decades of his career that he has chosen to preserve. His first full-length collection, Everything Moves With A Disfigured Grace, is also included here in its entirety. The text has been diligently revisited and revised. This handsome volume provides a definitive edition of previously unavailable works by this rewarding poet, and is ideal for both old fans and new readers.
“Robert Lavett Smith is bard to the dark side of the heart, working in service to those not often touched by the lights of light and love. Many poets conjure pain, then abandon it to the page, there to enact its damage. Others demand of it redemption, carrying every trauma into the light of salvation. Smith does neither—in his poems, pain simply is, and it is this is-ness that makes his work so quietly, savagely beautiful.”
—Christopher Watkins, author of The Rumble Strip and Black Market Crow
“What strikes me most vividly about the thirty-year span of this book is how entirely Robert Lavett Smith has re-tuned his sharp East Coast ear and eye to the California setting where he’s now spent more than half his life. His is not the Sophoclean landscape Jeffers gave us, nor the neon city of a Ferlinghetti. . .yet as I read and reread these pages, I’m reminded of another California poet,
Raymond Chandler, who would have recognized the “disfigured grace” Smith sees—not just on the mean-lonely streets of the neighborhoods he’s come to know, or in the lives of their changing cast of residents, but mirrored also in his own reluctant endurance through emotional and physical trauma, and for which the fog-filtered light of San Francisco becomes such an apt emblem. This is the
stuff great poetry is made of.”
–Ryan Guth, author ofHome Truths and Body and Soul
