The only safe place left in the world wants him to stay forever.
Four weeks ago, Dallas ended in a flash. Cooper Johansson, ex-linebacker turned Level 15 Bulwark, came out the other side with a shield, a party, and Daria, the girl he finally told the truth to.
Now their elvish scout, Hildelith, is going home. Home is north, and she won’t say what she ran from.
Past the Thornwood lies the Stillmarch, a frozen country that has stopped breathing. Rest restores nothing. Fire gives half the light and half the heat. A day’s walk takes two. Every potion, every ration, every point of mana has to be carried in, and the faceless Stillborn come for anything that stops moving.
So don’t stop. Simple.
Except the Stillmarch has one warm village left. In Vellmark, the fires burn hot, sleep actually works, and nobody ever dies. It’s run by Dave, a friendly guy from 1980s Earth in a patched jean jacket, and Dave would really like them to stay.
There’s always a catch. Dave’s catch is forever.
Saying no means going down. Into the ancient spillways of Kaldweir. Past a choir that sings spells out of the air. Toward the frozen heart of whatever stopped the north. No rest. No restock. No way back but through.
And for a shield wall who has only ever known how to plant his feet, survival means learning a whole new trick: holding the line on the move.
About the series: Doorborn drops people from Earth into a dying world run by an old, hungry System. Expect crunchy LitRPG with real status screens and earned levels, a found-family party (a linebacker, a deadpan biochemist, a Scottish cleric who cannae stop running toward the wounded, and an elf who counts her arrows out loud), a slow-burn romance, prestige class progression, and boss fights won with brains as much as brawn.
Cold Boot is Book 2 of the Doorborn series. Perfect for fans of Dungeon Crawler Carl, He Who Fights With Monsters, and The Primal Hunter.
