Paperback. Modern cosmology is populated almost entirely by things no one has ever seen. Dark matter, dark energy, fields and particles known only by their effects: the visible universe floats on a vast reservoir of the inferred. This is not a scandal. It is how ambitious physics has always worked. The neutrino, the Higgs boson, and the gravitational wave were each invisible before they were real. But there are honest ghosts and empty ones, and the difference has nothing to do with whether we can see them. It has to do with whether the universe was ever given a way to say no.This book is a guide to that difference. It grew out of an ordinary habit: reading the new cosmology papers, one after another, day after day, asking a single question of each one. Where does the loud conclusion actually rest? Out of that reading a pattern surfaced. Again and again a silence was read as a discovery, a chosen number was worn as a measured one, a tower of assumptions was offered as a single tidy idea. And out of the pattern grew a discipline, a short set of rules for introducing the unseen responsibly, not by forbidding imagination but by asking each new idea to show what it is made of.Written without a single equation, in plain and careful language, this book explains where our confidence in the invisible comes from, where it is earned, and where it quietly turns into self-deception. It is a field guide to the company of ghosts that fills the modern universe, and to the small, stubborn art of telling a discovery from a wish. The book is based on the academic paper: Kriger, B. (2026, July). A code of practice for introducing entities in cosmology.
