Print on Demand. This book, which came into effect in 1872, established California's Code of Civil Procedure and defined much of the state's legal practice and procedures. Before this code, laws were often inconsistent and varied across the state. Written by experts in various fields of law, the code's 49 chapters are divided into four parts: Courts of Justice, Civil Actions, Special Proceedings of a Civil Nature, and Evidence. The 1872 Code was an important step in organizing California's legal system and provided the foundation for modern legal practice in the state. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

The present edition of the Code of Civil Procedure is designed to present the complete text of the Code as now in force, together with convenient references to the en tire body of the decisions thereunder. The Code is thus adapted to the extensive changes wrought by the amend ments of 1880, made in conformity with the new Constitu tion of the State. The method of annotation adopted is characterized by the use of index or catch-words appropri ate to a compact manual like this. Condensation is further facilitated by the employment of gradations of type. The citation of cases is confined to those in the California Re ports, which are referred to by page and volume only. It is hoped that manifestations of careful and faithful effort will not seem lacking, and that the practitioner will be enabled to discover at a glance the object of his search.
