Item description from seller

Frequently found in yellow wraps but here bound into dark green or black textured boards with the word "Swallows" stamped into front board, possibly originally in silver gilt but now faded. Bottom corner of front board here slightly warped. This revised edition of Boothby's popular cocktail manual first published in 1891 as "Cocktail Boothby's American Bar-Tender" and again in 1908 as "The world's drinks and how to mix them / standard authority." Over 1500 recipes, significantly expanded from the four hundred or so in the first edition. Contains an exhaustive list of recipes: absinthes, cobblers, cocktails, highballs, juleps, rickeys, fizzes, frappés, punches, sours, and toddies, this pre-Prohibition manual served as both an historical archive of cocktail culture and a practical reference for mixologists, reflecting San Francisco's vibrant hospitality scene in the early 20th century. The deluxe edition called "Swallows" was sold as a gift reflecting the book's status among cocktail enthusiasts. Boothby, known for his self-promotion and showmanship, bartended at prestigious venues including the Palace Hotel, Bryon Hot Springs Hotel, and Fairmont Hotel. He served a term in the California State Assembly from the 43rd district from 1895 to 1897. His signature drink, the Boothby Cocktail (a pre-Prohibition cocktail that features rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, two types of bitters, and Champagne -- essentially just a Manhattan with the addition of sparkling wine) supposedly remains part of mixologist history, though we weren't able to find it listed here in a brief scan.
