- Book 2 of 2: Flow Mental Performance Support System (MPSS) — Multisport Series
Mental performance should not be separated from the way athletes practice, compete, communicate, recover, and learn.
The Mental Performance Support System (MPSS) gives coaches a practical, developmentally grounded framework for teaching mental skills inside the sport they already coach. It is not a motivational slogan, a collection of inspirational speeches, or an attempt to turn coaches into therapists. It is a structured system for helping athletes regain access to effective action when pressure, mistakes, frustration, distraction, or disconnection interfere with performance. All MPSS skills are supported at www.flowmpcc.com including a resident MPSS AI which gives you access conversationally to all material present in all MPSS manuals.
The manual develops six core MPSS skills:
• STOP
• Mindfulness Reset
• Optimism Reframing
• Radical Acceptance
• Rumination Recovery
• Connection Over Correction
Coaches learn not only what these skills mean, but how to introduce them, practice them, cue them under pressure, and gradually transfer ownership to athletes. The system includes a Six-Stage Progression for skill development and a Three-Tier Teaching System built around teaching, reinforcing, and retrieving skills when they are actually needed.
Written for coaches across sports, the manual distinguishes between the demands of rapid-response, precision, endurance, and contact environments while recognizing that an athlete’s role may matter as much as the sport itself. It includes practical coaching language, practice progressions, competition applications, troubleshooting guidance, reflection tools, culture-building frameworks, and adaptable resources for teams, individual athletes, training groups, programs, and physical-education settings.
MPSS is grounded in established ideas from psychological flexibility, mindfulness, cognitive reframing, stress inoculation, self-regulated learning, motivation, representative practice design, psychological safety, and relational coaching. These foundations are translated into language and routines coaches can actually use.
The larger goal is not to produce athletes who never struggle. It is to help athletes notice what is happening, recover access to their skills, remain connected, make an effective next decision, and become increasingly capable of coaching themselves.
Mental skills become reliable in competition when they are taught clearly, practiced deliberately, retrieved under realistic conditions, and supported by the environment around the athlete.
