Print on Demand. This book takes us back to the early 1900s, within a world confined by convention, yet brimming with the undercurrent of change. At the heart of this setting, Sarah Mosely dies, leaving behind an enigmatic silence. No will, no heirs, no instructions. But within this vacuum, her modest life becomes the catalyst for unexpected events. The once predictable town of Jordanstown is thrust into chaos, as society's long-held norms and the secret yearnings of its citizens are brought to light. The author deftly explores the dynamics of gender, power, and societal expectations. The women of Jordanstown, once relegated to the fringes, find themselves at a crossroads, questioning their traditional roles and seeking greater agency. The men, accustomed to dominance, grapple with the implications of a changing world. Through the intertwining lives of a judge, a politician, a socialite, and a young woman on the cusp of adulthood, this book delves into the complexities of human nature. It illuminates the hidden desires, fears, and ambitions that lie beneath the facade of conformity, ultimately revealing the profound impact that even the most seemingly insignificant of lives can have. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. …

On the morning of the 6th of April Mrs. Mosely did not appear at the usual hour, which was six o'clock. The maid waited breakfast until the toast was cold. Then she went to the door and knocked. No reply. She Opened the door, and fell with a scream to the floor. Something soft and swift like wings brushed her face. She could not tell what it was. She saw nothing.
The gardener, hearing her cries, ran in. They both approached the bed. They beheld the face of their mistress looking like the yellowed dead petals of a rose, wrinkled, withered, awfully still on the pillow.
