About this Item
The Clockmaker; or The Sayings and Doings of Samuel Slick, of Slickville; the Three Series in One Volume; Richard Bentley, New Burlington Street, London, 1850. The anonymous author of the Sam Slick series was Thomas Chandler Haliburton, Windsor, Nova Scotia, Canada. Thomas Chandler Haliburton (1796 1865) was a Nova Scotian politician, judge, and author. He made an important political contribution to the state of Nova Scotia before its entry into Confederation of Canada. He was the first international best-selling author of fiction from what is now Canada. In 1856, he emigrated to England, where he served as a Conservative Member of Parliament. Haliburton attained distinction as a local businessman and as a judge, but his greatest fame came from his published writings. He wrote a number of books on history, politics, and farm improvement. He first rose to international fame with his Clockmaker serial, which first appeared in the Novascotian and was later published as a book throughout the British Empire, as popular light reading. The work recounted the humorous adventures of the main character, Sam Slick. The Clockmaker series was written between 1836 and 1840. All early British editions are very scarce, including this 1850 edition. This book bound in green cloth, has a total of 540 pages. It is in very good condition. The spine is very faded but completely legible. The book is very sound, and the text block is free of any discoloration. Several pages at the start of the book have a bit of spotting in the margins. The book has the attractive bookplate of Robert Platt, pasted inside the front cover. Overall, a very collectible copy of an important book of early Canadian English literature.
