"By the Clock of St. James's" is a captivating memoir that offers an intimate glimpse into the inner workings of the British Royal Court. Written by Percy Armytage, who served for decades as a Gentleman Usher, the work provides an authoritative perspective on the traditions, ceremonies, and daily life of the monarchy during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras.
The narrative details the author's extensive experience managing grand state occasions, royal weddings, and diplomatic receptions. Through a series of personal anecdotes and professional observations, Armytage brings to life the rigid protocols and high-society culture of a bygone era. Readers are invited behind the scenes of St. James's Palace and other royal residences to witness the transition of the British Empire through the lens of its most formal institutions.
As a historical record, "By the Clock of St. James's" serves as an essential resource for those interested in the social history of London, the evolution of courtly etiquette, and the personalities that shaped the British monarchy at the turn of the century. It is both a tribute to the continuity of tradition and a detailed account of the meticulous service required to maintain the dignity of the Crown.
