Companion animal practice runs on constraint. The differential narrows, the diagnostic sequence is obvious, and then the client names a figure that will not reach the end of it. This handbook covers canine and feline medicine across twenty-five chapters, from triage and shock through cardiology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, oncology, neurology, dermatology, dentistry, behavior and anesthesia, and treats that constraint as a clinical variable rather than an interruption. Every condition is developed twice: the disease itself, and the decision about how much of the workup this patient will actually get.
It names the minimum workup that safely answers the question, states what the shortened path will miss, and identifies the finding that forces escalation regardless of budget.
Inside this handbook you will be able to:
• Build a tiered diagnostic plan with defined escalation triggers, so a deferred test stays in the plan rather than vanishing from the record
• Classify shock by mechanism before the first fluid bolus, separating the patients volume helps from the patients volume harms
• Stage preclinical mitral valve disease by chamber size and monitor it with an owner-counted resting respiratory rate that costs nothing
• Read a blood smear beside a total solids reading to separate hemorrhage, hemolysis and reduced production for the price of a slide
• Work an azotemic cat from urine taken before the fluids, so specific gravity is still there to make the creatinine interpretable
• Sequence the obstructed cat and the dilated stomach correctly, where decompression is the resuscitation rather than the preparation for it
• Trace recurrent pyoderma and recurrent otitis back to the primary factor rather than to the next antimicrobial
• Hold the financial and end-of-life conversations with a structure, recording the recommendation, the decline, the alternative and the trigger
Put it on the consulting room shelf and open it at the moment the plan has to change.
