From the Back Cover
Clinical Surgery is a core textbook of surgery that will enable medical students and junior doctors to:
- Understand the basis of symptoms and signs
- Diagnose common surgical disorders
- Order and interpret appropriate investigations
- Prepare the patient for an operation
- Deal with the patient after an operation, including the management of any complications that may arise.
Clinical Surgery:
- Combines symptoms and signs with a comprehensive overview of surgical practice
- Stresses that common things are common by prioritizing the ‘core’ information that students must know
- Is ideal for revision with 52 ‘At a Glance’ boxes summarizing the important features of the common surgical diseases on one page
- Emphasizes the importance of clinical skills in a section on history taking, examination and investigations
- Highlights the surgical emergencies in a section on the management of acute surgical illness and trauma
- Gives a comprehensive overview of general and specialist surgery in which each system has a section on clinical evaluation of the patient, pathology, clinical features and management of the disease
- Integrates basic science with clinical surgery by covering the pathophysiology of disease
- Includes chapters on orthopaedics and muscukoskeletal trauma
- Keeps operative detail to the absolute minimum required of medical students
- Is edited by a highly respected team, which includes leading professors from the UK and Ireland.
Lavishly illustrated in full colour, Clinical Surgery is divided into four sections:
Clinical Skills and Investigations, gives a solid grounding in the clinical skills required to diagnose the disease and explains the investigations that might be performed when assessing a patient
The Management of Acute Surgical Illness and Trauma, contains 10 chapters on the aetiology and pathophysiology, presentation and management of surgical emergencies
General and Specialist Surgery, reviews surgical problems by system and contains chapters on each of the surgical sub–specialists by respected experts in each field. These include, among others, orthopaedics, plastic surgery, ENT and Ophthalmology
Perioperative Care, outlines the essential components of how to manage patients before and after surgery, including chapters on pain management and rehabilitation.
