Understand the pharmacology. Recognize the risks. Keep the patient at the center of every treatment decision.
Each psychiatric prescription raises key questions. Why this medicine? What benefit should be expected? Which adverse effects require attention? How might another treatment, a medical condition, or a change in the patient's circumstances alter the response?
Clinical Psychopharmacology Handbook connects the science of psychiatric medicines with the clinical reasoning needed to address these questions. It brings together drug mechanisms, treatment considerations, monitoring, and patient care in a reference for healthcare professionals and students
Across 25 chapters, the handbook moves from neurobiology and pharmacology to major medication classes, disorder-based treatment, special populations, and bedside practice. Clear explanations, clinical tables, diagrams, and fictional teaching cases help readers relate scientific principles to practical assessment
The focus extends beyond knowing what a medicine does. Readers are encouraged to consider why it is being used, how its effects will be assessed, what might change its suitability, and how the patient experiences treatment
Inside, readers will explore:
-
THE FOUNDATIONS OF PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY
Examine neurotransmission, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacogenomics. Connect these principles with differences in drug exposure, therapeutic response, tolerability, and assessment before prescribing -
MAJOR PSYCHIATRIC MEDICATION CLASSES
Study antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, anxiolytics, sleep medicines, and treatments for ADHD, substance-use disorders, and cognitive disorders. Understand their clinical roles and safety considerations -
DISORDER-BASED TREATMENT
Explore medication considerations in depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, anxiety and trauma-related conditions. Consider diagnosis, illness phase, previous response, functioning, and treatment goals -
SPECIAL POPULATIONS AND MEDICAL COMORBIDITY
Review the factors that shape treatment in children, adolescents, older adults, pregnancy, and breastfeeding. Examine how physical illness and changes in organ function can influence medication selection, exposure, and follow-up. -
SWITCHING, WITHDRAWAL, AND DEPRESCRIBING
Understand the questions that arise when treatment is changed, interrupted, reduced, or stopped. Explore interactions, restart precautions, withdrawal symptoms, and the need for an individualized plan that accounts for relapse risk and treatment burden. -
BEDSIDE SAFETY AND CONTINUITY OF CARE
Strengthen your approach to medication reconciliation, clinical monitoring, recognition of serious adverse reactions, emergency escalation, patient counselling, and handover. Follow the reasoning that connects an observation or test result with an appropriate clinical response.
Chapter references, a glossary, and a subject index support study and further reading. Throughout the handbook, fictional teaching cases illustrate how information about the medicine, the patient, and the care setting can change the next clinical decision.
Written for readers in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and related healthcare disciplines, this handbook supports a structured approach to psychiatric medication management. It emphasizes assessment of benefit and burden, clear communication, and review as the patient's needs change
Build a stronger understanding of psychiatric medicines and the responsibilities that accompany their use. Add Clinical Psychopharmacology Handbook to your professional reading and use it alongside current prescribing information and local clinical guidance to support informed, patient-centered care.
