This comprehensive clinical manual provides mental health professionals with systematic protocols for integrating Schema Therapy and EMDR to treat complex PTSD, personality pathology, and developmental trauma. Written for licensed therapists, counselors, and clinical psychologists, this textbook bridges two evidence-based approaches into cohesive treatment strategies.
What This Manual Delivers:
The integration addresses what single-modality approaches often miss: EMDR processes traumatic memories while Schema Therapy resolves the developmental patterns and maladaptive schemas those memories created. This manual provides complete treatment protocols from assessment through termination across 23 detailed chapters.
Comprehensive Clinical Coverage:
Complete integration theory and rationale with research support
Step-by-step protocols for combining bilateral processing with imagery rescripting
Schema assessment and mode conceptualization integrated with EMDR phases
Treatment planning for borderline personality, complex PTSD, dissociative disorders
Flash Technique integration for highly dissociative presentations
Group therapy applications and intensive treatment formats
17 detailed case studies demonstrating integration across diverse presentations
Evidence-Based Integration:
Every protocol includes genuine research citations supporting clinical decisions. The manual synthesizes findings from the IREM trial, Schema Therapy RCTs, EMDR meta-analyses, and integration studies to provide clinicians with research-grounded treatment approaches.
Practical Clinical Tools:
Six comprehensive appendices provide reproducible assessment instruments, client psychoeducation handouts, session planning templates, progress note examples, treatment fidelity checklists, and complete case formulation examples with outcome data.
Who This Manual Serves:
Designed for clinicians with basic training in both EMDR and Schema Therapy seeking to integrate these approaches, this manual also benefits EMDR therapists adding Schema concepts and Schema therapists incorporating bilateral processing. Mental health professionals treating complex trauma, personality disorders, attachment difficulties, and treatment-resistant presentations will find systematic guidance for comprehensive intervention.
Clinical Applications Include:
Childhood sexual and physical abuse, emotional neglect, domestic violence exposure, combat trauma with moral injury, betrayal trauma, religious trauma, medical trauma, complicated grief, panic disorder with trauma origins, perfectionism and achievement trauma, hoarding with abandonment schemas, social anxiety from bullying, eating disorders with control issues, chronic pain with trauma history, and postpartum PTSD.
This clinical textbook equips therapists with integration competencies through detailed protocols, comprehensive case examples, supervision guidelines, ethical considerations, and research summaries. Treatment planning frameworks guide clinical decision-making about when to use EMDR, when to use Schema approaches, and how to combine them for maximum effectiveness.
Professional Development Support:
Chapters on supervision, consultation, ethical practice, and training resources support ongoing skill development. Research frontiers chapter keeps clinicians current with emerging evidence and protocol innovations.
For mental health professionals committed to evidence-based practice and comprehensive trauma treatment, this manual provides the integration framework that complex presentations require.
