Experienced clinicians provide a clear, summarized and weighted guide to the large field of internal medicine. The work provides the essentials of the subject. The latest diagnostic and therapeutic concepts are presented, with a focus on the facts relevant to daily patient care. Interdisciplinary topics such as heart and diabetes, heart and brain, heart and sport are also presented. Important key messages and potential errors are highlighted. In addition, the latest studies and guidelines from all important German, European and American specialist societies are taken into account, including the topics of telemedicine in cardiology and cardiac diseases in women.
Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Nikolaus Marx, born in 1968, is Professor of Internal Medicine/Cardiology and Director of the Medical Clinic I at the University Hospital Aachen. After studying in Mainz, Geneva and Düsseldorf and receiving his doctorate on the growth regulation of human renal carcinoma cell lines at the Institute of Pathology at the University of Mainz, he initially worked for two and a half years at the Klinikum Rechts der Isar and at the German Heart Centre in the Department of Cardiology. From 1997 to 1999, he completed a research stay at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA before continuing his specialist training as an internist, cardiologist and internal intensive care physician at the University Hospital in Ulm. In 2009, he was appointed to the chair of Internal Medicine/Cardiology in Aachen.
Prof. Dr. med. Erland Erdmann, MAE, FESC, FAHA, was awarded his doctorate in Göttingen with an experimental work on the effect of cardiac glycosides on cell membranes. After training in biochemistry at the University of Giessen, he became a specialist in internal medicine and later for cardiology at the Ludwig Maximilian University Munich. There he was appointed professor of internal medicine and head of the cardiac catheter laboratory. In 1993, he accepted a call to the chair of internal medicine (cardiology, pneumology, angiology, and internal intensive care medicine) at the University of Cologne. From 1997 to 2010, Prof. Erdmann as Vice Rector for Research represented the interests of the University of Cologne in the German Rectors’ Conference. For more than 20 years, he was the editor of the German Medical Weekly. In 2006, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class. Since 2012, Prof. Erdmann has been emeritus and has since worked as a member of both the ethics committee of the medical faculty of Cologne and the NRWreview commission for medical malpractice. He also publishes the continuing education journal Kompakt Kardiologie in the Biermann publishing house. The “Clinical Cardiology” was founded by Prof. Gerhard Riecker in 1975. It was taken over by Prof. Erdmann from the 4th edition in 1996. The 9th German edition, published together with Prof. Nikolaus Marx, is the first to be fully translated into English.
