Paperback. A blood specimen is only as reliable as the collection behind it. Every laboratory result begins with a moment: identifying the patient, selecting the right site, choosing appropriate equipment, collecting the specimen correctly, and protecting its integrity from bedside to laboratory. Clinical Atlas of Phlebotomy Procedures is a comprehensive clinical reference for phlebotomy students, trainees, newly certified technicians, and practicing professionals who want more than a basic introduction to blood collection. It brings together procedural technique, anatomy, specimen quality, patient safety, and professional standards in one structured resource. Rather than treating phlebotomy as a series of steps to memorize, this atlas emphasizes the reasoning behind the procedure-helping readers understand what to do, why each step matters, and how collection decisions can influence specimen quality and patient care. Inside, you will explore: Venipuncture from patient assessment and site selection through needle insertion, tube filling, mixing, removal, post-collection care, and specimen handling.Venous and capillary anatomy, including antecubital, hand, wrist, foot, and ankle sites and anatomical variations relevant to difficult access.Blood collection equipment, including evacuated tube systems, needles, safety devices, tube additives, separator gels, winged sets, syringes, transfer devices, tourniquets, and skin-preparation supplies.Order of draw and the scientific rationale behind collection sequence, additive carryover, tube filling, and common errors.Patient identification and specimen labeling, including two-identifier requirements, electronic orders, barcoding, bedside labeling, and chain-of-custody considerations.Venipuncture complications, including hematoma, syncope, nerve injury, arterial puncture, bleeding, phlebitis, and response.Capillary, pediatric, and neonatal collection, with attention to site selection, fingerstick and heel-stick technique, lancet selection, specimen quality, and age-specific considerations.Specialized collection procedures, including blood cultures, arterial blood gases, coagulation specimens, blood bank collections, therapeutic drug monitoring, trace elements, toxicology, and forensic specimens.Pre-analytical quality, including hemolysis, lipemia, icterus, specimen stability, transport, processing, rejection, recollection, and root-cause analysis.Point-of-care testing and special populations, including geriatric, oncology, dialysis, anticoagulated, bariatric, immunocompromised, and anxious patients.Professional practice, including infection control, occupational safety, communication, documentation, competency assessment, continuing education, and professional development.Clinical standards and professional frameworks are woven throughout the atlas, including CLSI guidance, OSHA requirements, CAP accreditation principles, and laboratory quality practices. Certification pathways and the regulatory context of professional phlebotomy practice are also addressed. Designed for both learning and clinical reinforcement, this atlas can support classroom study, skills development, competency review, clinical preparation, and ongoing professional reference. Its structured chapters and learning objectives support both foundational learning and ongoing professional reference. Learn the technique. Understand the rationale. Recognize complications. Protect the specimen. Clinical competence is more than performing a blood draw.
