Paperback. The most difficult anesthetic often begins before the patient enters the operating room.Advanced age, cardiovascular disease, pulmonary dysfunction, obesity, renal impairment, medication burden, a difficult airway, or limited physiologic reserve can turn an otherwise routine procedure into a high-risk clinical problem.Clinical Anesthesia in High-Risk Patients is written for those cases.Rather than presenting anesthesia as a sequence of drugs and techniques, this practical reference focuses on the decisions that determine whether a vulnerable patient moves safely through surgery-from initial risk assessment to induction, intraoperative management, crisis response, and recovery.Readers develop a structured approach to: identify patient-specific risks before anesthesia and recognize problems that deserve optimization or additional planning;prepare for difficult ventilation, intubation, aspiration risk, and other airway challenges;choose anesthetic medications with greater attention to comorbidity, physiology, interactions, and expected hemodynamic effects;interpret changing blood pressure, perfusion, oxygenation, ventilation, and cardiac function during surgery;respond systematically when hypotension, hypoxemia, arrhythmia, difficult airway, bleeding, or another intraoperative crisis develops;anticipate postoperative respiratory, cardiovascular, neurologic, pain, and medication-related complications;and recognize when recovery is not progressing as expected and escalation is required. The emphasis throughout is on anticipation rather than reaction.A high-risk anesthetic is safer when the clinician has already considered what is most likely to go wrong, what early warning signs will look like, and which intervention should come first if instability develops. This makes the book especially useful for medical students, anesthesia trainees, residents, perioperative clinicians, and professionals who want a concise bridge between anesthesia knowledge and real-time clinical judgment.Current anesthesia literature continues to emphasize practice-oriented management of difficult airways and high-risk situations, including physiologic airway difficulty and emergency airway rescue. Elsevier ShopUse Clinical Anesthesia in High-Risk Patients to strengthen the decisions that matter before induction, during instability, and throughout recovery-when preparation can make the difference between a manageable problem and a preventable crisis.
