She was buried under the wreckage of a stolen academic career and a broken heart. In her place stands Aura: a polished, unfeeling construct of black silk and cold control.Aura is a high-end specialist in the curation of fantasy. She sells sex; uninhibited, precise, and perfectly executed, but to her, the bedroom is a laboratory. For the Architect, she builds a pillow fort of innocence. For the Judge, she becomes the defendant. For the Somatic Detective, she is a mystery to be solved in the dark. She collects these encounters like specimens, cataloging the erotic hungers of the city's elite in a secret manuscript, proving over and over that she is the one holding the pen.But the collection has a flaw.As Aura moves from the brutalist penthouse of a billionaire to the dusty studio of a forger, the walls of her fortress begin to crack. A kind widower with a dangerous gift, a magician who offers a key, and a pair of renovators building a life from sawdust and sweat challenge her carefully curated detachment. When the lines between observer and participant blur, Aura is forced to confront the one hunger she hasn't cataloged: her own.Visceral, intellectual, and scorching hot, this is a story about the lies we tell to survive, and the messy, beautiful truth of what it means to be seen. Aura sells sex and fantasy to the elite, cataloging the hungers like specimens. But when real intimacy breaches her defenses, the observer becomes the subject. A scorching, literary exploration of trauma, desire, and control. This item is printed on demand. Control is the ultimate illusion. And she has perfected the art of the lie.
To her high-net-worth clients, she is Aura: a blank canvas, a perfect reflection, a fantasy tailored to their specific, secret hungers.
To the Architect, she is a soft place to land. To the Judge, she is the ruthless prosecutor. To the Tech Billionaire, she is a simulated girlfriend.
But when the hotel door closes and the transaction is complete, Aura disappears. In the sterile silence of her apartment, she opens The Client Book.
Here, she is the curator. With the cold precision of an academic researcher, she catalogs their desires, dissects their weaknesses, and pins them to the page like butterflies. It is her fortress. Her thesis. Her way of remaining untouched in a profession built on intimacy.
But the fortress is cracking.
A kind widower offers a gift that breaks the rules. A bookbinder sees the trembling hands behind the cool façade. A ghostwriter steals her voice. As the boundaries between the observer and the specimen begin to blur, the ghost of the girl she used to be, Cassie, the brilliant scholar destroyed by a mentor’s betrayal, begins to claw her way to the surface.
From the hushed intensity of a sensory deprivation chamber to the raw, sawdust-scented air of a renovation site, Aura must navigate a landscape of escalating desire and control. But as her collection grows, she is forced to confront a terrifying question:
If you build a cage to keep the world out, are you the warden… or the prisoner?
