Born in Posada de Omaña (León) in 1912, Samuel Rubio Calzón entered the Augustinian religious order in 1928, and was ordained a priest in 1940. He studied music at the Madrid Conservatory. He continued his studies in Rome, where he qualified as a teacher and gained a doctorate from the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music. Subsequently, he furthered his Gregorian and musical palaeography studies in Montserrat, Silos and Solesmes (France). He was chapel master of San Lorenzo Monastery in El Escorial and the organist of its Royal Basilica. He was also Professor of Musicology at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid, president of the Spanish Musicology Society and a member of the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts. He undertook much musical research work, cataloguing and editing works by Antonio Soler, Tomás Luis de Victoria, Juan Navarro and Cristóbal Morales, among others. He died in Madrid in 1986.
