Clarity Over Addiction: Seeing Addiction as Jesus Does by Gregory L. Madison offers a distinctly biblical perspective on one of the most difficult struggles facing individuals, families, churches, and communities today. Rather than viewing addiction merely as a physical, psychological, or behavioral problem, this book examines addiction through the lens of Scripture and presents it ultimately as a matter of the heart-a misplaced worship that allows something created to take the place that belongs to God.
Organized around four movements-Intervention, Evaluation, Transformation, and Integration-Clarity Over Addiction is designed as a guide for Christ-centered support groups and individuals seeking a deeper understanding of addiction and biblical freedom.
The book challenges readers to look beyond the symptoms of addiction and examine its roots: desires, worship, pride, discontentment, distorted thinking, and the human tendency to seek comfort, security, identity, or satisfaction apart from God. It asks an important question: What happens when the thing we look to for relief becomes the thing we worship?
At the center of the book is Jesus Christ. Madison emphasizes that the answer to addiction is not simply stronger willpower or behavior modification. True change begins with reconciliation to God through Christ. The blood of Christ provides forgiveness, cleanses the conscience, establishes a new identity, and provides the foundation for a transformed life through the Holy Spirit.
Clarity Over Addiction also explores the importance of Scripture, prayer, the Holy Spirit, Christian fellowship, accountability, reverence for God, renewed thinking, and transformed desires. It encourages readers to move from merely asking, "How can I stop?" to asking, "How can I love Christ more?" The goal is not merely sobriety, but transformation-becoming more like Christ and learning to delight in Him.
The book ultimately points readers toward a greater vision of victory. Addiction may be the immediate struggle, but God is the greatest need. When Christ becomes the believer's greatest treasure, addictive idols lose their throne. Long-term freedom is therefore presented not simply as moving farther away from addiction, but as drawing nearer to the Savior.
Clarity Over Addiction is an invitation to see addiction differently, see Christ more clearly, and pursue a life in which worship replaces idolatry, truth replaces deception, and the transforming power of Jesus Christ becomes the foundation for genuine freedom.
