You became a leader because you were good at the work. Now the work is people.
A hurricane hits. File volume doubles overnight. An audit lands mid-surge. A veteran adjuster walks out. A tense carrier call leaves your team rattled and the next deployment still incoming. You are no longer the one handling the claim. You are the one responsible for everyone who is — and everything that happens between them, the files, the carriers, and the pressure that does not let up.
Nobody trained you for this part.
Claim the Lead was written for exactly this moment — for the insurance adjusting manager, CAT team leader, desk supervisor, and claims operations leader navigating the gap between adjuster excellence and leadership authority.
Award-winning author and licensed adjuster Dr. Karissa Thomas draws from real-world claims leadership experience to deliver practical, field-tested strategies for the environments claims leaders actually work inside — high volume, high stakes, and rarely calm.
What You Will Learn
Make the transition from high-performing adjuster to confident, credible claims leader — without losing the respect of the team you just joined as their manager. Lead CAT teams through surge events and catastrophe deployments when file volume, staffing pressure, and carrier expectations all spike simultaneously. Communicate clearly with carriers, adjusters, vendors, and contractors when fragmented information and competing priorities make clarity feel impossible. Build accountability without burning out the adjusters you depend on. De-escalate tension in high-pressure claims environments before it fractures team performance. Manage remote and field adjusting teams effectively across changing locations and conditions. Maintain performance standards during audits, staffing shortages, and operational disruption. Retain strong adjusters through demanding catastrophe seasons when the temptation to leave is highest. Develop the next generation of leaders within your claims organization. Stay grounded and steady while balancing speed, accuracy, compliance, and team well-being — often at the same time.
Built for Real Claims Leadership
Leadership in the claims industry does not happen under calm conditions. File volume increases while staffing decreases. Carriers demand updates while adjusters need support. Audits arrive during catastrophe response. Communication fragments under pressure. And the leaders who hold it together are not the ones with the most authority — they are the ones with the clearest communication, the steadiest presence, and the practical tools to stabilize a team when everything around it is moving.
This book provides that structure. Through real-world scenarios and field-tested strategies, you will learn how to guide adjusters through difficult files, steady teams during surge events, and maintain trust during operational change — without losing yourself in the process.
Who This Book Is For
Insurance claims managers and desk supervisors leading teams through daily and catastrophe operations. CAT team leaders managing volume, staffing, and carrier relationships under surge conditions. Independent adjusting firm leaders building the leadership culture that retains top adjusters and drives performance. Senior adjusters stepping into management who need a practical transition roadmap. Claims operations and training leaders developing the next generation of claims leadership.
The claims industry does not need more theory. It needs leaders who can stabilize teams, communicate clearly, and perform under pressure — claim after claim, season after season.
Every claim is a leadership moment. Every conversation sets a standard. Every decision shapes the team you are building.
Claim the Lead. Communicate clearly. Steady the process. Guide the outcome.
