Build practical country and bluegrass skills on the 3-string cigar box guitar, from your first chords and rhythm patterns to riffs, backup playing and the first steps toward a simple lead break.
Cigar Box Guitar Country & Bluegrass Method, Book 1: Foundations is a progressive, beginner-friendly method for 3-string cigar box guitar in Open G (G-D-G). Rather than learning isolated riffs, you’ll learn the chords, rhythms, techniques and short phrases that give country and bluegrass their character, then put them together in backup playing, lead ideas and complete tunes.
Inside you’ll learn:
- Country and bluegrass riffs in G, C, D and A
- Essential chords, movable shapes and common progressions
- Bass-note strumming, train beat and country rhythm patterns
- The Nashville Number System, capo use and transposition
- Carter-style melody playing, alternating bass and walking bass
- Backup playing, chord embellishments and well-placed fills
- Scales, target notes and building your first simple break
- Five traditional jam tunes (Old Joe Clark, Boil Them Cabbage Down, Cripple Creek, Bill Cheatham and Angeline the Baker), each in Beginner and Early Intermediate arrangements
- TAB throughout, with standard notation for much of the music
An extensive online audio companion is included, with more than 150 demonstration recordings, practice tracks and backing tracks. Listen to the examples, slow the playback when needed, practice with the backing tracks and download audio for continued practice.
Written by Brent C. Robitaille, music educator and author of more than 60 instructional music books.
Book 1: Foundations is the starting point in the Cigar Box Guitar Country & Bluegrass Method. Later books build on these skills with more developed lead playing, jam techniques, improvisation, arranging and performance.
