"A vintage work in the evoloving history of the relationship between gay people and institutional Christianity. McNeill's book remains central to the story."--Malcolm Boyd, author of Gay Priest

"A brave and good book which shatters bad myths."--Commonweal

The first edition of Father John F. McNeill's classic The Church and the Homosexual, published in 1976, convincingly established that the Bible does not condemn homosexuality. In this fourth edition, he calls on the Vatican to make a public act of repentance for hits homophobia.

John J. McNeill (1925-2015) was an ordained priest and practicing psychotherapist. He was expelled from the Society of Jesus in 1987 for refusing to cease his ministry to gay men and lesbians. He received a doctorate in philosophy from Louvain University in Beligum and taught philosophy and theology at Fordham University, Union Theological Seminary, and other institutions.
