Print on Demand. This book delves into the art of church building, exploring the principles of architecture as they relate to the creation of sacred spaces. The author examines the history of church architecture, focusing specifically on the unique development of this art form in England. He draws comparisons between the grandeur of cathedrals and the intimate beauty of village churches, arguing that the latter are often more profoundly expressive of the faith they embody. The author critiques the trends in church construction that have emerged in America, arguing that the pursuit of trendy styles over enduring principles has led to a decline in the quality and meaningfulness of church architecture. He asserts that a return to the core values of simplicity, durability, and reverence is essential to restoring the true spirit of church building. This book offers a powerful and thought-provoking perspective on the vital role that architecture plays in shaping our spiritual experience. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. …

Explore how church architecture can become a living whole, not just a building .
This clear, insightful guide shows how design, decoration, and sacred spaces can unite to express a community’s faith and history.
This book argues that architecture for worship is not a style exercise but a creation that must reflect spiritual ideals, national character, and a coherent tradition. It critiques decorative trends that break the sanctity of sacred spaces and champions a disciplined, unified approach—rooted in English Gothic heritage—toward chapels, baptisteries, altars, and cathedrals. What you’ll experience
- A thoughtful framework for planning churches as cohesive, living environments
- Practical guidance on sacristies, altars, and chancel fittings aligned with ritual use
- A critical history of church decoration, with examples of both pitfalls and ideal outcomes
- A long view on style, continuity, and national tradition in sacred architecture
