Item description from seller

Paperback. When we think of the Middle Ages, one often first sees knights in shining armor jousting against each other on horseback at a tournament. The original tournament of the 11th and 12th century, however, was a melee fought between two teams for cavalry training and profit. The 12th-century author Chretien de Troyes is widely regarded as the father of Arthurian romance and his five books about Arthur's knights are seen as a precursor to the modern novel. His martial exploits captured the tournament of his time but also focused on individual exploits. In this thesis Samuel E Bradford traces the history of the tournament and how Arthurian romance influenced the development of the tournament during the medieval rise of the individual.
