An illustrated copy of Jean Froissart's extensive history on Europe in the fourteenth century, translated by Thomas Johnes. Complete in two volumes. 'Chronicles of England' are a collection of stories about the Hundred Years' War, starting with the events leading up to the deposition of Edward II, looking at the period up to 1400, recounting prominent events in western Europe. Froissart was a medieval author and court historical in the fourteenth century. He is best known for this work, and for 'Melidor', an Arthurian romance'. Translated by Thomas Johnes. Johnes was a writer, politician, landscape architect, and farmer. Illustrated with a chromolithograph frontispiece and coloured title page to Volume I, and numerous in-text engravings. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Light rubbing to the spines. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd spot.
