He was nominated previously for the Southern Medical Society Medical Re-search Award and the Bristol-Meyers Squibb award for distinguished achievement in Pain Research. He was a past recipient of the prestigious Karl Koeller research grant from the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine and was selected to "Who's Who in International Medicine." He was the former medical director of pain management and was an associate professor at a university medical center hospital. He has presented his research at national and international medical conferences. He has a strong interest in diversity and the appropriate pain management in different gender, age, race and ethnic groups. In other words, he does not believe that a one size fits all pain approach is appropriate. Dr. Ackerman maintains an active busy private practice. His practice consists of interventional and medical treatment of chronic pain and is considered an expert in Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy. He has published chapters in multiple medical textbooks and has published fourteen books including coauthoring and editing the AMA best seller book the AMA Guides to Injury and Disease Causation (First and Second Editions). Pain management can be expensive as most insurance plans do not pay 100%. The patient on the other hand is a consumer. A patient needs to understand what treatments benefit the patient and which only benefit the physician. The only way a patient can accomplish this goal is to understand the cause of the pain and what treatments are medically necessary by reading this book. This book describes the pain source and what treatments are available. If a pain physician recommends an injection etc. the patient should be able to define the potential efficacy of the proposed treatment. This is the goal of this book. A patient needs to realize that modalities such as healthy nutrition, exercise, weight loss and smoking cessation are simple modalities which may reduce one's pain intensity. Therapy, chiropractic, acupuncture, regenerative treatments, biofeedback, etc., may also reduce some of pain. Chronic pain will usually not be completely resolved by any modality. The goal of pain management therefore, is pain reduction using a multidisciplinary approach. This item is printed on demand.
