From the Author
Over the past twenty years, I have collaborated on many books with my husband and creative partner, Don Wood. Our son, Bruce Robert Wood, grew up modeling for the characters in many of the children's books Don and I have created together. Among others, Bruce was the model for the boy in THE NAPPING HOUSE, QUICK AS A CRICKET, and KING BIDGOOD'S IN THE BATHTUB.
Now Bruce has grown up! He is twenty -five, and he has joined the family's creative team. THE CHRISTMAS ADVENTURE OF SPACE ELF SAM was a true family project. Mom (that's me) wrote the story; son, (Bruce wood) illustrated the book; and dad, (Don Wood) functioned as art editor.
It took Bruce two-and-one-half years to complete the illustrations for THE CHRISTMAS ADVENTURE OF SPACE ELF SAM. Using complex 3D modeling software, Bruce created the illustrations on a Silicon Graphics Workstation (a powerful high-end computer ). He used the same type of incredibly complex software that was used to create movies such as Toy Story and Jurassic Park.
3D modeling has nothing to do with 3D movies. You don't put on 3D glasses to view a 3D modeled IMAGE. 3D modeling is a tool that artists can use to create art in three dimensions. First think of a sculptor working in clay, creating a statue that can be viewed from all sides, top and bottom. Then imagine being able to do this not in clay, but on a computer! Instead of painting the illustrations in two dimensions, as a painter would do, Bruce sculpted THE CHRISTMAS ADVENTURE OF SPACE ELF in three dimensions.
3D modeling is a fascinating process.
