Greek thought prepared the ground for Christian faith—and this book explains how.
This study surveys Greek philosophy from its early focus on nature to its later concerns with mind, life, and morality. It shows how early thinkers, the Socratic and post-Socratic schools, and the conditioning of Greek civilization formed ideas that helped shape Christian teaching. The work also examines how philosophy and theology interacted, and how the Greek quest for first principles influenced the development of religious thought.
- Tracing the progression from a philosophy of nature to a philosophy of mind and then to a philosophy of life.
- Explaining how the early Fathers and Christian writers saw Greek philosophy as a propaedeutic aid to the Gospel.
- Highlighting the ways Greek ideas about God, guilt, and the need for a mediator influenced Christian theology.
- Discussing the role of language, culture, and historical context in preparing Christianity for broad reception.
