Why do Christians baptize with water, gather around bread and wine, confess sins, anoint the sick, bless marriages, and ordain ministers, and why do different churches disagree so strongly about what these acts actually do?
Christian Sacraments Explained is an accessible guide to the rites that have shaped Christian life from the New Testament to the present. Beginning with the basic question of what a sacrament is, Paul Abeto traces the biblical foundations, early Christian practices, medieval developments, Reformation disputes, and modern denominational differences behind Baptism, the Eucharist, Confirmation and Chrismation, Confession and Absolution, Anointing of the Sick, Marriage, and Holy Orders.
The book does not force Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Lutheran, Anglican, Reformed, Baptist, Methodist, Pentecostal, and other Christian traditions into a single answer. Instead, it explains where they agree, where they genuinely differ, and why those disagreements developed. Along the way, it examines infant Baptism, baptismal regeneration, immersion, the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist, transubstantiation, Communion discipline, sacramental sacrifice, apostolic succession, ordination, confession, healing, marriage, and the validity of sacraments performed by imperfect ministers.
Written for readers who want more than a glossary but do not need a seminary textbook, Christian Sacraments Explained treats Christian history and theology seriously without assuming specialist knowledge. At the center of the book is one question that has followed Christianity for centuries: where, and in what way, has Christ promised to meet his people through visible and material signs?
