Paperback. With the martyrs behind him, Wesley turns to the English divines. Volume VII opens with Joseph Hall - bishop, satirist, and the writer Wesley prized for compressing a whole doctrine into a paragraph - beginning with Heaven upon Earth; or, Of True Peace of Mind, which weighs the tranquility the heathen philosophers sought against the peace that only grace can give. "Not Athens must teach this lesson, but Jerusalem."Hall's Epistles follow: letters on the shape of an ordinary Christian life - what actually distinguishes a believer from his neighbor, how a day ought to be spent - together with a sermon on the Passion. The volume closes with Robert Bolton, the Oxford disputant who despised the Puritans and mocked the preaching of Perkins until God broke him, and who came out of that long ordeal with an uncommon gift for comforting afflicted consciences. His own Discourse of True Happiness ends the volume.Lightly modernized for the modern reader while leaving Wesley's own voice untouched, with a headnote introducing each work, Wesley's own further parallels marked where they occur, and a Scripture index at the close.
