"By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion."
The Temple was ash on a distant hill. The Davidic throne stood empty. A people who had built their entire covenant identity around a land, a city, and a sanctuary now sat in a foreign empire, harps hung on willow trees, asking the question every exile eventually asks: can Yahuah be worshipped outside the land? Can the covenant survive without the Temple?
BY THE WATERS OF BABYLON, Book Four of the Chosen and Scattered series, traces Judah's fall from the death of the northern kingdom through Nebuchadnezzar's three waves of conquest, the destruction of Solomon's Temple in 587 BC, the long years of captivity, and the partial, imperfect return under Cyrus of Persia.
Inside, you'll walk through:
- Why Judah watched Israel fall to Assyria and failed to heed the warning
- Hezekiah and Josiah — the reformer kings who proved that even sincere revival cannot always outrun accumulated consequence
- The night Jerusalem fell, and the Temple that had stood since Solomon burned
- The Psalms of lament — grief unmedicated, spoken honestly to Yahuah from a foreign riverbank
- Daniel, Ezekiel, and Jeremiah — three prophetic voices answering exile from three different postures
- Jeremiah's letter to the exiles, and the return that followed under Cyrus — and those who chose to stay
- Babylon as an enduring spiritual condition, not only a place in history
This is the second great chapter in the story of the scattered covenant people — the moment exile stopped being merely a punishment and became the crucible that produced the synagogue, deepened the Torah tradition, and gave the world some of Scripture's rawest and most honest literature.
Every exile eventually asks where Yahuah is in the ruins. This book traces the answer Judah was given — and finds it still speaking to every scattered people since.
