One-sided 23 x 38 cm page with handcoloured maps at right and b&w copperplate engravings at left. Plate 56, No. 21, page 29. Plate 57, No. 21, p. 9. Single page from "The Universal Traveller: Or, A Compleat Description Of the several Nations of the World" by Mr. Salmon, printed for Richard Baldwin, London, 1759. Maps of Canton, Chang chwen Shan or Sançian Isle, and Ma-kao & the Adjacent Isles. At left are Chinese Temples or Sin-ko-tayen. Based on surveys conducted by French Jesuits at the behest of the Emperor Kang Hsiand, Jean-Baptiste Du Halde's Description Geographique constitutes the first scientific mapping of China and remains the most important cartographic record of the region from the eighteenth century.
