Item description from seller

With foreword by Arthur Waley and introduction by Wolfram Eberhard. In China, the breaking, then binding, of the feet of young women to render them more attractive to the opposite sex was a fashion for many centuries, but reached its peak of popularity in the mid to late Qing. A painful process, essentially crippling the practitioner for life, it apparently catered to men who preferred women who were partially lame or had an uncertain gait. The material for Dr. Levy's detailed study of this practice was drawn from some 1500 pages of primary source material, much of it in Chinese. The volume remains a standard reference on this custom. All internal pages clean and unmarked. A very good copy in very good DJ, now in Mylar. 352 pp., 84 b&w photos and drawings, bibliography, index. Size: 21 x 14 cm.
