A scarce and important work.Volume IV of 'The China Review', this volume including the issues from July 1875 to June 1876, including all six issues bound in one volume.Bound without the title page, and index to the contents, a total of two leaves.'The China Review' was an academic journal published from 1872 to 1901, providing a wealth of articles about China, written by foreign scholars.This volume includes fascinating articles such as 'The Folklore of China', 'Cosmogony and Religion', 'Ostriculture in China', 'Chinese Exploration of the Indian Ocean During the Fifteenth Century', 'The Prisons of Canton', 'A Trip to the Hot Springs of Yung Mak', 'The Chinese Vernacular', 'Pao-sze: The Cleopatra of China', 'The Lamentations and Death of Ch'ung Chen, the Last Emperor of the Ming Dynasty', 'Essays on the Chinese Language', and many more.The first years of the journal were edited by Nicholas Belfeld Dennys, who studied Chinese folklore, publishing works such as 'The Treaty Ports of China' and 'Folklore of China'. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, rubbed, with a little loss of leather to the head of the spine and to the extremities. Rubbing is a little heavier to the spine. Small crack to the head of the front joint. Numerical label to the front board. Pencil mark to the front board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the odd spot. Bound without the title page, and index to the contents, a total of two leaves. Stamp of the School of Oriental Studies in Finsbury Circus to the contents leaf of No.1. Good.
