Add to basketChina and JapanGeorge Philip & Son, London & Liverpool,c1900This map, titled "China and Japan," was published by George Philip & Son, one of Britain's leading cartographic and educational publishers throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. Operating from London and Liverpool, the firm was widely respected for producing high-quality school atlases, wall maps, and reference works distinguished by their accurate engraving and practical layout. This map reflects the company's hallmark style: clear typography, carefully applied colour washes, and a balanced composition intended for both instructional and general reference use.Produced in the late Victorian period, the map presents the Qing Empire in its traditional provincial divisions, with major cities, rivers, and key trading ports prominently marked. Borderlands such as Mongolia, Manchuria, Tibet, and Xinjiang are typically delineated, mirroring Western geographic knowledge before the political shifts of the early 20th century. The map's treatment of Japan captures the nation during its Meiji-era modernisation, showing improved transport networks, expanding urban centres, and a clearer national outline reflecting Japan's rising international profile. As an educational artifact, the map embodies the precision and reliability associated with George Philip & Son's cartographic work. Today it stands as a valuable historical document, illustrating how Britain represented East Asia during a period of rapid regional transformation.Map has a centre fold with minor toning around the edges and one or two very small spots.
