The wraps are in good condition. 6 ¾ x 4 ¼, 4 pages, 2 ounces. XX “Chilo Speaks is a very small, very rare 1936 folkloric pamphlet by Ohio historian David Knowlton Webb, written under the persona “Chilo, Prince of the Moundbuilders.” It’s essentially a literary folkloric warning to Ohioans to protect their land, history, and natural beauty. This is not a mass market book; it’s closer to a regional historical curiosity or a piece of Depression era antiquarian Americana. XX Chilo, Prince of the Moundbuilders is a constructed persona Webb used to embody: The imagined voice of the ancient Adena/Hopewell mound building cultures, A guardian spirit of Ohio’s prehistoric earthworks, A moral authority speaking to modern readers about stewardship and memory. This kind of literary device was common in early 20th century regional folklore writing—authors adopting mythic or Indigenous voices to comment on contemporary issues. Today, we’d read it with more caution about cultural ventriloquism, but historically it fits into the era’s antiquarian tradition. The message is: Protect the land, Honor the region’s Indigenous past, Preserve natural beauty and historical sites, Avoid “mediocrity” and spiritual neglect (this tone is typical of Webb’s moralizing style). It’s essentially a conservationist and heritage preservation appeal, wrapped in mythic voice. XX Why it’s rare: Privately printed (not a commercial press), Small physical format (pamphlets are easily lost or damaged), Regional distribution only, Folklore ephemera—often produced in tiny runs for local historical societies or civic groups. David Knowlton Webb wrote several pieces blending Ohio history, Local myth, Moral exhortation, Romanticized Indigenous imagery. Chilo Speaks appears to be one of his more symbolic works—less historical analysis, more allegorical messaging. This pamphlet is a fascinating artifact because it sits at the intersection of: Early 20th century regional identity building, Antiquarian fascination with prehistoric earthworks, Conservationist rhetoric, Literary myth making. It’s not academically authoritative on Indigenous history, but it is a revealing example of how Ohioans in the 1930s imagined their relationship to the land and its ancient cultures.”.…
